The South African motorsport TV kingpin passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 aged 60 years
Jan Hartzer cut a familiar figure on race tracks, carrying his big camera on his shoulder and interviewing drivers, while risking his own safety at times to get up close to the action. He was instrumental in broadcasting motor racing live in all classes in South Africa and more recently producing world class footage on a limited budget for possibly unrivalled live streaming.
Passionate in promoting younger talent led Jan to karting, where he shared the stories and successes of local drivers through his videos. He attended nearly all of the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals around the world, likened to being a ‘godfather’ to Team South Africa on tour, always supporting the newcomers and superstars.
Long-time close media friend Michele Lupini said, «What I will always remember first about Jan Hartzer will be his huge heart, his friendship and his encyclopaedic knowledge of motorsport.»
