The Federation has just made official the cancellation of the OK and OKJ World Championship scheduled in Brazil in December.
A news that the paddock had been whispering for a few weeks, especially after the backtracking of the top teams no longer agreeing to the idea of the long Brazilian trip, especially due to COVID-19 restrictions in progress.
A pity for the whole international karting movement, especially considering the great project that the Speed Park of Biringui had set up, not as a simple stage of the calendar but as an event more similar to Formula 1. Commitment and efforts that will probably finally see the light of day in 2022 or in the near future, the right recognition for two years of illusions (forced by the pandemic).
The FIA has also announced that the OK class World Championship will be rescheduled in Europe, specifically in Spain (the track is still to be clarified) on the weekend of 31 October 2021.
Felipe Massa, President of the FIA's International Karting Commission said: «It is with great sadness that we find ourselves having to cancel the World Championship event in Birigui. The global situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic makes the event impossible. I would like to personally thank the local organiser Speed Park and the CBA staff for their commitment and hard work to date and we look forward to working together with them to develop FIA Karting in Brazil. A new event will be held in Europe to allow the best Karting drivers in the world to finish their season with a World Championship» .
Updates will follow.
