On August 30-31, the legendary Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix celebrates its 30th edition, reaffirming its status as the world’s largest and most prestigious street karting event. Over the decades, the race has drawn teams and champions from across the globe, making it a must-attend fixture for serious karters. Here are the key highlights that make Rock Island a unique experience in international karting.
A true international showcase
The event has welcomed teams from 13 countries and crowned 22 international winners, including drivers from Canada, Bermuda, England, France, Latvia, the Philippines, Poland, Italy, and more. Rock Island is renowned for its friendly, festival-like vibe—described as “one big barbecue” where fierce racing meets camaraderie. The event draws over 20,000 spectators annually, with a vibrant social media following of more than 8,000 fans and this year, a well known Band, the Blooze Brothers, will be on stage, as the Promoter reminded us: "The This isn't some local quartet, it's an 11-piece big ticket band out of Chicago that would normally cost $40-$50 US for each person to hear and we're offering that for free. As anyone who'll be here for the event can see, it's not your "sit in a chair and listen to music" group, it's a "get up and party and dance" group. Plus when you're done racing, there are all kinds of local businesses within an easy walk from the hotel - not in the middle of a cornfield or park far out of town. It's not just a race, it's a festival weekend with autograph session, car show, vendors. Oh, one last point. Where else in kart racing do you entertain 20,000 or more spectators, with the number going up every year? Free admission folks ... come and check out kart racing!"
Diverse Classes and Technical Challenges
The Grand Prix is one of the few events globally to feature 2-cycle, 4-cycle, Vintage, and gearbox classes all in one weekend. The street circuit, combining asphalt and concrete, offers high-speed straights, technical corners, and unique challenges like manhole covers and changing grip levels. Champions and Success Stories 2023 winner Erik Gasparovich (Latvia) brought decades of experience and serves as a mentor to the next generation of racers. Alumni like Scott Speed, Graham Rahal, and Conor Daly have gone on to compete in F1, IndyCar, NASCAR, and more.
The “Indianapolis 500 of Karting”
The Rock Island Grand Prix is considered karting’s equivalent of the Indy 500—where every win is hard-fought and unforgettable. The 2025 edition promises even more excitement, with a free Saturday night concert and newly repaved sections of the track.
Welcoming City and Tourism Opportunities
Rock Island and the Quad-Cities region offer rich musical heritage, historic sites, and warm hospitality for racers and families. Convenient access via Moline International Airport and a variety of local attractions make for a memorable race weekend.
Looking Ahead
The Grand Prix prepares drivers for the challenges of street circuits now popular in F1, Formula E, NASCAR, and IndyCar. Registration is now open —don’t miss your chance to experience karting’s most iconic street race.
The Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of karting’s spirit, competition, and community. Whether you’re a seasoned driver or a passionate fan, this is an event to add to your motorsport bucket list.
