The recent decision by the World Motor Sport Council turns everything upside down when it comes to tyres: MG Tires is the new sole supplier for the 2021 season.
Rumours from the paddock had already predicted the decision and today the FIA has made the official announcement. Bridgestone will no longer be the brand responsible for supplying tyres for the upcoming season in any of the four FIA Karting categories. The decision was dictated by the COVID-19 issues which, according to the Federation, would have caused major logistical problems.
MG Tires confirms its commitment to the World Championship in Brazil, as it has done since last year, and enters the paddock of international karting as a protagonist, providing tyres for all the federation's competitions and trophies.
FIA Karting: The FIA has recently been informed that Bridgestone is no longer able to supply tyres to FIA Karting Championships, Cups and Trophies due to logistical problems with COVID-19. In light of this situation, and acting in the best interests of the sport, it was important for the FIA to find a feasible and immediate alternative solution for the supply of tyres for events to be held on the European continent in 2021. In an electronic vote on 27 April 2021, the World Motor Sport Council has therefore, in addition to its selection as the exclusive tyre supplier for the FIA Karting events to be held in Brazil in 2021, selected MG Tires as the exclusive supplier of replacement tyres for the FIA Karting Championships, Cups and Trophies organised on the European continent in 2021, with the exception of the Superkart category.
It will therefore remain to be understood and analysed when and on which occasion all teams and drivers of all classes will be able to test the new tyres which, at this point, will play an even more fundamental role in the course of the 2021 season. We remind you that the European Championship will officially start on the weekend of 16th May in Genk (Belgium) for the OK and OKJ classes.
