Just to keep things interesting, the scattered rain falling over parts of Europe arrived late Friday afternoon to spice up the official timed practice at the Rotax MAX Challenge Euro Golden Trophy. After Mini MAX had finished their sessions, the Juniors were not so lucky, split by more than 10 seconds between the faster and slower groups, as the Karting Genk circuit soaked up the water and mixed up the results. By the end of the program, the track was already drying out considerably as the DD2 Masters reached the five-minute mark.
With the grids now determined for all 24 of Saturday’s qualifying heats, the competition is incredibly close at the top of the timesheets. The youngest in the five Rotax categories is the Mini MAX where a number of drivers shared the quickest times in the unofficial practice. Maxim Becker secured pole in Group 1 as the fastest, while Jakub Gasparovic set best lap in Group 2. In Junior MAX, local Beau Lowette managed to take pole, also in Group 1, just before the rain. Macauley Bishop led the second group after a slight delay, giving him P2 in the overall qualifying standings. Another British driver, Morgan Porter, claimed the top spot in Senior MAX on his last lap to outpace Group 1 leader Lewis Gilbert, who was the final round winner of the RMC Euro Trophy in 2022. The 2-speed gearbox DD2 field is filled with present and former champions, topped on his fourth and final lap also by Mark Kimber. The current MAX World #1 leads Matiss Malinovskis in the ranking. Same engine, different age group, the DD2 Masters sees Martynas Tankevicius showing how it’s done in slippery conditions, as he did during the European season on several occasions. Christophe Capitaine was next fastest.
