Suzuka KF1 World Cup & Asia-Pacific KF2 Championship - Aggiornamento

Following on the 2007 season, in which he did not put a foot wrong, Italian driver Marco Ardigò (Tonykart/Vortex) is once again the red-hot favourite; but Marco is fully aware that competition will be fierce, and it will come from his team-mates Gary Catt, Matias Laine and Will Stevens, the latter also having won in Suzuka last year in KF2. Having discovered the performance of the new KF engines in the 2007 edition, and especially remarked the excellent reliability of engines (every participant in the 2007 KF2 final at Suzuka saw the chequered flag), the JAF (the Japanese National Sporting Authority) has introduced KF1 and KF2 this season in its national championship, thus replacing the 100cc Formula A and ICA. This has earned the World Cup for KF1, and even more so the Asia-Pacific KF2 Championship, a strong local participation.

Against the Tonykart drivers, Sauro Cesetti, Jason Parrott and Libor Toman for Birel, Maranello Davide Forè, Luca Giacomello on Zanardi, and many others will do all they can stop the green armada.

Also keep an eye on Richard Bradley (Wright/Parilla) author of a very convincing beginning of season in the British Championship. As for Japanese drivers, there will be six of them: Kazuya Ishii (who regularly competes in Europe), Hiroyuki Inoue, Keita Kawaguchi, Toshikazu Harada, Shoji Sato and Hiroyuki Shiraiwa. With 44 entries, the Asia-Pacific KF2 Championship will cut a fine figure and bring together a high-quality European delegation and the best Japanese drivers. The 2007 European Junior Champion, Brit Jack Harvey, will be the leader of European competitors, who will also include Finn Petri Suvanto, Spaniard Adria Domenech, Karol Basz from Poland and Italy’s Matteo Viganò, Giacomo Patrono and “Giaguaro Nero”. And as regards Japan, Yoshihaki Maehara, Jun Nakamura and Hiroaki Watanani will also take on the starting grid.

So far, the drivers completed the official qualifying sessions and the two heats.
In KF1, Davide Forè stopped fastest time with 47”791, one thousandth of a second faster than Ardigò (47”792), almost 0.2” faster than Cesetti (47”973). In the heats, Ardigò won over Catt and Forè in heat 1, with the two swapping position in heat 2. Cesetti finished 4th in both heats, followed by team-mate Parrott in 5th. Stevens took 7th overall, Laine struggled in heat 1 (16) and will start from 11th on grid, Libor had two difficult heats after qualifying 5th, while Piccioni will start a lowly 18.

In KF2, Birel has dominated qualifying sessions and heats. Brit Jack Harvey stopped fastest time with 48”588, followed by Polish Karol Basz (48”697) and local driver Kouta Sawabe (48”711). Italy’s Camponeschi put his Tonykart in 4th (48”787), just ahead of fellow countryman Patrono’s Birel (48.794). In the heats, Harvey won the first and finished 2nd in heat 2 and will start in pole for the prefinal. Team mate Patrono took two 2nd places and will be in front row. Then two Japanese drivers, Otani and Katsuta will be in row 2 for Birel. Disappointment for Finn Suvanto (Tonykart) and Italy’s Viganò (Birel) who did not qualify for the prefinal. After a poor qualifying, Suvanto took 15th in heat 1 and suffered technical problems at the start of heat 2, while Viganò was out at the first lap in heat 1 after qualifying 10th – and finishing 19th in heat 2.
