RMCET Winter Cup kicks off 2024 for Rotax with WSK at the helm

Columns: Races
The 2024 season is officially underway for Rotax Racing in Europe with this weekend which marks the fourth running of the Rotax Max Challenge Euro Trophy Winter Cup.

The international karting circuit of Kart Centre Campillos in Spain promises to deliver another exciting event to break the ice for the 192 competitors representing more than 30 different nations. This year also sees a new organisation behind the leading European series, as BRP-Rotax partners with the experienced team from WSK Promotions srl. from Italy; entering the global world of Rotax Racing for the first time in history.
Five categories are being contested over the course of the weekend at the RMCET Winter Cup: Rotax Mini MAX, Junior MAX, Senior MAX, DD2 and DD2 Masters, with the Senior class totalling 90 drivers. Three of the 2023 RMCET Winter Cup champions return once again to have another shot at the title, including the youngest from the UK, Jacob Ashcroft, who makes the move up to Juniors. In the DD2 and DD2 Masters classes, Latvia’s Patriks Noels Locmelis and twice winner from Lithuania Martynas Tankevicius are expected to feature at the top of the results in defending their titles. There’s a star-studded line-up across the field of almost 200 entries, including a list of RMC Grand Finals and international champions, along with national heroes and some newcomers to this level in the sport. However, the longest karting track in southern Spain, at 1.580 metres, is always guaranteed to bring out the best in the competition and turn on some great racing action with its challenging layout.

Following two days of open practice already in mixed weather conditions, Friday the serious part begins with official qualifying before lunch and the initial heats scheduled in the afternoon. And judging by the close laptimes posted in the lead-up, it’s clearly shaping up to be an absolute thriller! Saturday the racing continues all day to determine the grid positions for Sunday morning’s pre-finals and eliminate a number of the Senior MAX drivers, as the places for the final grids are decided. In total, 34 races will be contested throughout the event as the teams and competitors adapt to a new format and some changes to the regulations with the introduction of the WSK-style of competition.

The rewards are sweet for the top contenders at the RMCET Winter Cup so the battle for more than just the title will likely keep the race fans on the edge of their seats up to the chequered flag. The weather is not looking promising for the Andalusian region, but the rain may be welcomed by some. Winners will be awarded free entries to the RMC Euro Trophy four-round championship that begins next month in Genk, Belgium, plus there are RMC International Trophy entries for Le Mans in July.

Follow all the sessions via the live timing online from Friday, March 8. The Livestream coverage begins on Sunday local CET time in Spain at 10:40 for the Pre-Finals and 14:00 for the Finals – highlighted with provisional podium celebrations immediately following each Final race.
