Columns: Close Up
The competition staged by Vroom has elected Oleksandr Bondarev, the European OK Junior Champion, as 2023’s Driver of the Year, with 2685 votes

The competition has always been popular among enthusiasts who, for the occasion, vote for their favorite kart drivers, candidates who have competed in the FIA Championships and the RMC Grand Finals. In this seventh edition, fans of Ukrainian driver Oleksandr Bondarev were the most active. From day one, social media produced a high level of consensus towards the European Junior Champion and the difference with the other drivers immediately appeared unbridgeable.

The title of Driver of the Year, according to our social media, is yet another acknowledgement that adds glitter to a season characterized by Bondarev’s renaissance, especially after the bad injury that forced him to miss almost an entire season. The strength of mind of this driver who has been in the news since his days racing in Mini and consistently a key player over time made the difference. Oleksandr's success in the 2023 FIA OK Junior European Championship has brought an important cycle for the Ukrainian driver to its completion, now more than ever ready for the next step in Motorsport.

Next, there was a final head-to-head for the second place between OKJ World Champion Dries Van Langendonk and the surprising Veeti Salmi, winner of the E10 Rotax category in Bahrain. In the end, the very young Finnish driver, first place in the E-Cup Mini, prevailed over the Belgian by about a hundred votes. The event in Bahrain and the great support received during the Vroom Award period echoes the results the very young Finnish driver achieved, always on the podium of the last three editions of the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals with third place in 2021 (Micro Max) , second place in 2022 (Micro Max) and third place in the Finnish Rotax championship in 2023.

World Champion Dries Van Langendonk, recently awarded at the FIA Gala, thus placed third. In a recent interview with us, the young Dries simply confirmed that he wants to continue working next year and, above all, have fun. A winning recipe, from being a promise in Mini and a certainty in Junior, with the next seasonsure to be even more challenging.

Vasile the most voted among the others
Like every year, we also left the possibility of choosing a "Best Outsider" not present in the list of nominees. The driver with the most votes was Daniel Vasile. The Birel Art driver has shown significant growth this season, obtaining more than fine results: second place at the European Championship and on the podium of the KZ2 World Championship in Wackersdorf. He also took second place in the German DSKM Championship and other significant placings which put him in the list of favorites for next season.

Below is the ranking of the top 10 candidates for the 2023 edition
