Mark Kimber (GBR) RMCGF 2022, the winners of the last edition

- Stories
While waiting to get into the heart of the 2023 competition, let's relive, together with the protagonists, the outcome of the last edition, held in Portimao, as reported in Vroom Magazine.

Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals
KARTODRÓMO INTERNACIONAL ALGARVE, Portimao (Portugal), November 19th-26th 2022

ROTAX DD2

The dream to become the first driver to hold the Rotax Grand Finals title in three different engine classes prompted the 2016 Junior MAX and 2021 Senior MAX champion to compete in the DD2 category this year. Winning his ticket from the RMCET as Europe’s best, Mark Kimber (GBR) was clearly focused on succeeding as he dominated all the races to make event history. Glenn van Parijs (BEL) proved to be his closest threat, taking pole and the Pre-Final B win, before finishing vice champ. The picture fails to tell the story of how demanding the racing and intense the rivalry was in the 2-speed gearbox class. Xen de Ruwe lost out in the run-in with Jakub Bezel (CZE) for another podium, while Axel Saarniala (FIN) was P5; winner of Senior MAX in 2019.

GETTING THROUGH THE FIRST FEW LAPS IN THE LEAD IS DIFFICULT AS THE RACING IS SO CLOSE IN THE DD2

Incredible feeling to win the Grand Finals and being my third title in this event, in each of the classes I have competed, makes it even more special to be setting records at such a big event that has gone on for 20+ years. We knew since the start of the week we had the speed so it was just about converting it into results. Getting through the first few laps in the lead is difficult as the racing is so close in the DD2 category, so it was important to start in pole position for the final. After that I knew I had to try and hold position at the start and hope for some battling behind. Once I edged a small gap over Glenn [van Parijs] it was about being consistent lap after lap and I managed within 0.15 seconds for 16+ laps, which showed me and the team that we had done a perfect job setting the kart and engine up. It was great to get the victory for Team UK, especially as it helped us to win our first Nations Cup in a few years. The support received from my family and everyone before and after the event has been exceptional, so I’m grateful for that.
