Columns: Stories
While waiting to get into the heart of the 2023 competition, let's relive, together with the protagonists, the outcome of the last edition, held in Portimao, as reported in Vroom Magazine.

Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals
KARTODRÓMO INTERNACIONAL ALGARVE, Portimao (Portugal), November 19th-26th 2022

MICRO MAX
The pride of Portugal was awakened in the form of an 11-year-old karter named Martim Marques. He started karting at the age of four on the track in Cabo do Mundo and also in Braga, but in his last season in Micro MAX, Martim became the first Portuguese driver to stand on the top step at the RMCGF. From P11 on the grid, he worked his way into the leading group to cross the line marginally ahead of Majus Mazinas (LTU) and 2021 front-runner Albie Friend (GBR). 4th place was Pre-final winner Maxim Bobreshov (UAE) over fastest qualifier Daniel Minto (GBR) from grid 17.

I NEVER GAVE UP AND ALWAYS BELIEVED IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE

It was an incredible week! It’s a privilege to be with the best in the world in a unique event at world level. We worked a lot, me and my mechanic, to find the best set-up and we realized from the beginning of the week that we had a strong possibility of reaching the podium. In all heats we were at the front with the objective of going to the pre-final in the top 5. Unfortunately an incident in the pre-final meant I finished the race in P35 so would start the final in P11. I never gave up and always believed it would be possible. In the final after two laps it was already P3. It was exciting to be so close to victory. The strategy was just to lead on the penultimate lap and defend the position until the chequered flag, which fortunately happened. Being world #1 Rotax Champion is a dream come true. I have worked hard to reach the top and it was with great honour that I defended my country’s colours at this Grand Finals... it is a page that I write in the history of my country and the sport. I want to thank my mechanic, my family and the excellent organization of this magnificent event. In the first hours, we were still not aware of the reality or dimension of this victory. I received hundreds of calls from all over the country congratulating me for the achievement and the entire karting community at home expressed pride in me for taking the flag of Portugal to the highest place on the podium in a world final. When the national anthem played, with the trophy in my arms – it was incredible.
