Adria Karting Raceway, Round 2 - Adria Karting Raceway in Italy is playing host to the Rotax MAX Challenge Euro Trophy this weekend, with an international line-up of 180 drivers contesting the second round of four on the 2021 series calendar (Text – Jen Wade & Photo – ©Matteo Segato)
The weather looks perfect going into the competition, with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-20s expected to make the event a bit less challenging than the opening round in Belgium. In addition to the Junior- and Senior MAX classes, together with the DD2 and DD2 Masters, the Rotax Micro MAX and Mini MAX make their long-awaited season debut supporting the Euro Trophy. A very special prize awaits the youngsters in both these categories as well, with the eligible winners of the Euro Trophy round in Italy being awarded their personal invitation (including free entry) to compete at the RMC International Trophy at Le Mans, France at the end of July.
It’s a welcome return to the popular 1.3km circuit a short distance from Venice and looking at the entry list, it’s definitely going to be another exciting edition of the championship in the race for points. Of course, local restrictions resulting from the global pandemic unfortunately still prevent spectators attending the race meeting, apart from the supporters, while health measures remain in place. But the good news is, that everyone not able to be there can watch all the track action online throughout the weekend via YouTube for the livestream or follow the live timing and latest results.
The first official day of the RMCET program gave the drivers a chance to be best prepared for the important timed practice Friday afternoon, with four sessions each prior to five minute qualifying. None of the round one winners secured pole position, although Great Britain’s Mark Kimber would have been starting on the front row, having set the fastest lap in Senior MAX, had it not been for a post-session penalty handed out to a number of the competitors in Group 1 of the class. Some local Italian drivers have shown up near the top of the timesheets, as could certainly be expected, but with 24 qualifying heats on Saturday to decide the ranking for Sunday’s finals, there is still a lot of racing to unfold when the karts take to the track at 9.50am after the morning warm-up.
