Andrea Kimi Antonelli: «I'm feeling better and I hope to be back as soon as possible!»

Columns: Interview
The OK European Champion is back to talk about his accident in Portugal. An episode that does not distract Antonelli from his 2021 goal, that is to win again.

The epilogue of the OK World Championship on the Algarve circuit (Portimao) was certainly not in the plans of the driver from Bologna, who was unfortunately involved in the crash of the first lap. A confused and blurred dynamic, as well as caused by the disproportionate amount of water that had rapidly invaded the track on the last day of the race. One of the ugliest accidents of recent years, still in front of the eyes of all those involved.

After weeks of distance and convalescence, Andrea Kimi Antonelli returns to speak about the incident, reassuring first of all about his conditions that, soon, will put him back behind the wheel to replicate the good things done in such a particular season. As a matter of fact, we remind that three of the best results of the year, Antonelli became European OK Champion with a triumphal ride worthy of note, his also the success in the WSK Euro Series and the triumph in the Italian ACI Karting Championship.

- Andrea, we were frightened when we saw that bad accident, so first of all I ask you, how are you now?
«After the operation I'm better, I still have my leg in plaster. In two weeks I still have more visits and they will tell me how it's going».

- Can you explain more about the dynamics?
«It's difficult to explain the dynamics because there was a lot of water on the track and you couldn't see very well. From what they told me, a kart ahead spun. After leaving the track, it returned to the trajectory while I was arriving, and I was overtaking a driver. Unfortunately I didn't have time to discard it».

- When will you be able to return to the track?
«I don't know yet because the doctors haven't given me a certain date. I hope as soon as possible».

- The accident was a parenthesis of a winning season! How do you evaluate this 2020 with the title of European Champion?
«I have to say that it was a very challenging year that taught me a lot and went above my initial expectations».

- What are your plans for 2021 and upcoming competitions?
«In 2021 I will continue with the kart season in the OK category, keeping an eye on F4 even though I won't be able to race there until September».
