KARTING CHAMPIONSHIPS SET TO BE 'BIGGER THAN BEN HUR'

With over 460 competitors coming from all corners of Australia and New Zealand to compete in the Victorian Karting Championships in Geelong next month the event is set to be ‘bigger than Ben Hur.’

With over 460 competitors coming from all corners of Australia and New Zealand to compete in the Victorian Karting Championships in Geelong next month the event is set to be ‘bigger than Ben Hur.’

The three-day event, starting on Friday February 8, will feature drivers from seven years old in the Midgets category, teenagers in the junior classes, adults in the senior categories and there is even a class for those more experienced in life – the over 40 year olds.

Karting is where all of today’s current day motorsport stars started their career. When looking at last year’s V8 Supercar Championship top ten championship finishers, every one of them started their careers in karting. In fact, when Geelong hosted the 1998 Australian Championships current V8 Supercar drivers Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Paul Dumbrell and Steve Owen all competed.

In this year’s Victorian Championships the next generation of famous Australian motorsport names will be in action – namely Aaron Seton (son of 1997 V8 Supercar Champion Glenn) and Matthew Brabham (grandson of three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jack).

Seton, who hails from the Gold Coast, will compete in the Midgets category against 24 other competitors while reaching speeds in excess of 80 km/h in a controlled environment. It is this sort of experience that provides these children, both boys and girls, basic driving skills well before they are able to obtain their road licence.

Amongst the 16 categories that make up the event, which is sponsored by Pettaras Press, is no less than six current National Champions.

The largest field of drivers is the elite category of Clubman Light where 54 drivers will assemble to do battle during qualifying and the heat races in a attempt to secure a berth for the 32 spots available on the grid in the championship final.

Included in this field is multiple-time National Champions Jason Burns and Bart Price (who is also the reigning Victorian Champion), Western Australian hotshots Steven Scoble and Deepal Kandola along with local driver Aaron Ivermee and female competitors Abby Kellie and Carly Anderson.

“This event is set to be the biggest entry list for a single race meeting in Australian karting throughout 2008. There will be non-stop action throughout all three days of the championships,” said Victorian Karting Association President David Murray.

“The Geelong club are continually improving their facility to ensure it remains as one of the best venues in Australian karting.

“With over 460 competitors coming from all across Australia and New Zealand it is not only karting which will benefit from the championships but also the entire region with most competitors arriving late next week with their crews.

“The last time Geelong hosted the National Championships it broke the record for the number of entries received for the event and I believe the number of entries this year would also go close as a record for a Victorian Championship.

“All in all it looks set to be a fantastic event and if anyone wants to see tomorrow’s stars of Australian motorsport in action they should come out to the track to check out the racing.”

Qualifying for the Victorian Karting Championships sponsored by Pettaras Press begins on Friday February 8 followed by heat races on Saturday February 9 and the championship finals on February 10.

ABOUT KARTING
Karting is a sport for people of all ages - from as young as seven to over 70 years old, everyone can enjoy it!

With children racing at speeds up to 80km/h it is a sport that teaches these kids, both boys and girls, basic driving skills well before they are able to obtain their road licence.

There is no doubt karting is competitive but it is also fun and family orientated, with involvement in the sport both on and off the track giving it a strong feeling of community. It teaches driving skills and offers people an opportunity to gain a career in motorsport, all in a safe and organised environment.

Kart meetings take place at circuits across Australia every weekend and are either a club, regional, state or national level meeting. There are 92 clubs across Australia affiliated with the Australian Karting Association.

These clubs are mainly sprint kart clubs which race on bitumen circuits however, some regions also have dirt and speedway tracks which drivers can race at. An alternative to the traditional style of karting is a recent addition to Australian circuits, endurance karting.

A full list of clubs and contact details for karting clubs across Australia can be found athttp://www.www.karting.net.au/
