Peter de Bruijn’s Maddox team hit the Circuito Internazionale di Napoli in Sarno for the first round of the European KZ1 Championship bagging a fantastic 2nd place...
... with his talented official driver, Brit Jack Hawksworth.
Despite the absence of some manufacturers, the Euro KZ1 starting grid is a tough turf, and the Maddox ace has to face some sturdy opposition to hit a positive result. The start of the weekend speaks quite unequivocally: the material is good but pays something to the top contenders.
Free practice is nearly inexistent for the British driver as a result of technical difficulties. Nonetheless, in qualifying Jack stops the 9th fastest time and goes on to take 6th in Heat 1 and 8th in Heat 2. A technical problem after 3 laps of Heat 3 drops the Maddox driver to 13th on Race 1 starting grid. But rain is expected, and Jack uses all his experience to take his Maddox/Parilla to second on the podium. Already 6th after one lap, Jack makes up positions in every lap, and by Lap 7 he gains the runner-up spot which he keeps to the chequered quite undisturbed.
Race 2 is not so favourable for the Maddox ace. It has stopped raining in the meantime, and after a good start Jack starts dropping positions lacking something in terms of power. Although he’s out of the podium fight, he races steadily in the points ending 9th, which grant him the 3rd position in the provisional championship standings.
“The podium came a bit as a surprise – comments Peter de Bruijn – but we worked our socks off and I believe is very well deserved. We still have margins to improve our package, as Race 2 showed, but Jack drove exceptionally well and we need to carry on in this direction. There are still over two months before the final round, and we will have certainly made some steps forward by then. For Maddox team the fight is very much on!”
