Da Luz surprising

World Cup for KF2, Alcaniz (Spain), 20th September 2009

Portugal’s David Da Luz, on Zanardi, grabs the KF2 World Cup win after seemingly away from podium for nearly all the final. In fact, final protagonists – for that matter also prefinal – are Maisano, Tiene and Viganò, who after having taken prefinal flag in that same order, swapped leading places continuously throughout the final. A final held under strong gales that hit the track and with the first ten lapping at about 59”1, what makes the difference are the details. Maisano, Tiene and Viganò respect the script to the penultimate lap, when the Birel driver’s engine betrays him stopping at the corner that leads to the finishing line.

Maisano leads to turn four, where overtaking is common, leaving a small gap and Tiene tries to slip through. The two crash and Da Luz finds himself in the lead with Kosmic driver and Belgian’s Vandoorne, on Crg, following behind. However, podium is not definitive because Tiene gets a 3” penalty - for having passed the white line in the starting procedure (see picture below) – he gets back placed to 5th. The other Kosmic driver, Australia’s Mitchell comes up to take the third podium step thus making it a trio of outsiders.
