The I Open International, held on the new circuit Ciudad del Motor in Alcaniz, has been the icing on the cake of a solid season of Spanish karting. Several international drivers joined in and were protagonist of some exciting racing that was cheered on by over 6,000 fans who were also attracted by the participation of F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa. The international event, the first ever to be hosted at the circuit in Alcaniz, was organized thanks to the Onroad support,of the Automovil Club Circuito Guadalope and the Royal Spanish federation.
Drivers representing 8 nations raced to the wire, particularly motivated by awards amountig. In KZ2 Spanish Champion Juan Alberto Nieves took the win ahead of fellow countrymen Josè Antonio Perez and Iago Rego. In KF2 Adrià Domenech took the honours with Norwegian Tomas Eidjord finishing second and David Alabart third. Carlos Sainz jr., son of former Rally World Champion Carlos Sainz, took the win in KF3 after marking fastest time on Saturday’s timed practice. Italian Kevin Ceccon took second after Gerard Rojas was disqualified, and Adrian del Rio moved up to third. Angel Sancho of the Automovil Club Circuito Guadalope was the only driver from the Aragon region. After fighting for position in KF2, he was forced to retire with one lap to go for technical problems.
On Sunday F1 McLaren Mercedes test driver Pedro de la Rosa took part in several initiatives. He held a meeting with Formula Karting Aragon young talents, praising their efforts and the high level achieved during the past six months of practice and training. And then he animated the enthusiastic crowd with a brilliant karting performance, posing with the drivers and his fans for the photographers.
