The first round of the European KF3 Championship heads to the final phase on the French circuit of Varennes. The qualifying heats decided the 34 finalists, but the uncertain conditions and the many accidents proved quite a test even for the more experienced drivers.
After the qualifying heat session, with six heats for each driver, and several top contenders excluded from the final phase of the weekend – among them pole setter Giuseppe Gagliano, French driver Gabriel Aubry, Spaniard Albert Gil and Italian Luca Corberi – the first race featured a very competitive line up.
Connor Jupp will start from pole position after grabbing two wins and one second place, with Italian Alessio Piccini joining him on front row following his two wins and two second places. Another Italian driver, Simone Cunati will start from 3rd place, with Spaniard Alex Palou completing row 2. The uncertain conditions and the many accidents proved quite a test even for the more experienced drivers, such as Russell – 2nd in qualifying practice but 6th after the heats – the French duo Boccolacci and Besancenez – 9th and 19th respectively on starting grid – and Canadian Lance Stroll, 26th on grid following a very poor 67th time in qualifying.
